Why you need to keep fit during lockdown?

There are many benefits to keeping fit during lockdown. These include:

  • improved sleep
  • lowered blood pressure
  • reduced stress levels
  • reduce anxiety and depression
  • increasing speed of metabolism

All of these are important, especially during lockdown as the increased time at home could promote inactivity and can have a detrimental effect on physical and mental health.

How to keep fit at home?

It can be hard to have motivation to do home workouts and can be very frustrating. However, you don’t need to do hours on end, just 15-30 minutes a day will get your blood pumping. Try different activities until you find what works well for you. For example, HIIT (high intensity interval training), body weight strength training, running, dance or Pilates. There are plenty of ways to implement a home workout programme. For example, online classes to follow, make up your own circuits or even get together on zoom which a group of friends and motivate each other

Injury prevention during lockdown

Even though lockdown provides everyone with more time to exercise, this can be detrimental and could lead to over-training, increasing the chance of overuse injuries. However, this extra time can be used to your advantage, by focusing on areas that usually gets ignored during normal life. For example, do that extra bit of strengthening work on a weak area, increase the amount of stretching and foam rolling, or just use the time for extra rest after hard workouts. The best type of recovery you can do is rest, so spend that extra hour in front of the tv with your legs up and recover ready for your next workout.
